SAINT JAMES SCHOOL

Giving

Annual Fund

Tax-deductible gifts to the Saint James School Annual Fund advance our programs and offerings by supporting the extraordinary value of our school’s education. Donations allow countless resources to be placed at the fingertips of administration, teachers, coaches, and students.

It is our pleasure to acknowledge donors to this fund in our Annual Report each summer, as well as notifying individuals and families of special gifts made in honor or memory of others.

Gifts to the Annual Fund may be:

  • Designated to a specific purpose, program, team, or division

– or –

  • Undesignated, which help fulfill prioritized needs throughout the school, including investments in new programs, safety enhancements, facility upgrades, campus improvements, and much more. These priorities vary from year to year.

Endowment Fund

The Saint James School Endowment Fund is a permanent investment that generates income to supplement school programs. The endowment currently consists of two parts.

The endowment allows you to leave a legacy that will continue to grow and support the Saint James School educational experience for years to come.

  • The General Endowment directly supports school programs as a part of the annual budget and by funding special projects designated by the Board of Trustees.
  • The Scholarship Endowment helps deserving students who might otherwise not be able to afford a Saint James School education.

Capital Campaign

Gifts to the Capital Campaign provide the resources for capital projects, such as new construction and/or the maintenance and expansion of existing facilities as well as purchasing equipment. They also reduce the debt on the existing facilities, thus enabling the school to add or to renovate areas of the campus that need attention.

Capital Campaign gifts currently support the continued development of the Saint James School Commons facility – a collaborative space for teaching, learning, and dining.

  • Phase I opened in Fall 2019 and provided a school-wide dining facility with farm to table appeal. A school-wide Community Garden also opened in Fall 2021.
  • Phase II funds are still being raised and will complete The Commons project by providing a new music classroom, lobby space, and school gift shop.

Gift Planning

Planned gifts are made as a result of careful reflection about the type of legacy donors wish to leave Saint James School. These gifts – often a bequest, trust, or gift of property helps both the donor and the school. Donors may reduce taxes, increase income, or satisfy other personal financial needs while Saint James becomes the beneficiary of an outright or deferred gift.

If Saint James is named as the non-profit or remainder beneficiary, our students will benefit and the donor will receive an income tax deduction, minimize capital gains taxes, and possibly arrange for increased retirement income. Check with your financial advisor for information as to how this might affect you in your situation.

Below are a few avenues in which donors can significantly impact future generations of Saint James students through planned gifts.

  • Charitable Lead Trusts allow a donor to transfer a large amount of property, cash or securities to Saint James School while retaining a specified income, normally for life. At the end of the trust, the property is transferred to Saint James.
  • Gifts of Retained Income enable a donor to contribute gifts or property (such as homes and farms) while retaining the right to use it for the duration of your lifetime. By arranging for this now, you will receive an immediate income tax deduction for the present value and the right for Saint James to receive the property in the future.
  • Charitable Remainder Unitrusts are an arrangement in which you entrust a trustee with money or property with instructions to pay you or someone you designate an income, usually for a lifetime. The income will be a percentage of the value of the trust. Upon the death of the person receiving the income, the remainder of the trust becomes the property of the non-profit organization designated in the original agreement to become the recipient.

Matching Gifts

As an employee benefit, many parent companies match their staff’s philanthropic contributions. Matching gifts may allow you to double or even triple your gift to Saint James School.

The process is simple. After confirming your employer is a Matching Gift Company, request a matching gift form (usually available through Human Resources), complete it, and return to Saint James School with your donation. The Saint James School Advancement Office will then submit a form to your company’s matching gift department which subsequently sends the matching gift back to the school.
